Vaccine questions
Dogs need rabies, distemper/parvo, Bordetella and canine influenza (H3N2 and H3N8). Cats need rabies and FVRCP, and every record must stay current through the last day of the stay.

The required and recommended vaccines, the timing rules and how to send records.
Dogs
Which vaccines does a dog need?
Rabies, distemper/parvo (often one combination shot), Bordetella and canine influenza. No dog is accepted without proof of current rabies.
Is the canine flu shot accepted after one dose?
Yes. The first dose is accepted for boarding, then the booster follows 3 to 4 weeks later and the vaccine is repeated yearly. Do not miss the booster.
What is recommended but not required?
Leptospirosis, heartworm prevention and flea prevention. Ask your veterinarian about them.
Does Bordetella have to be an injection?
No. It can be an injection, intranasal or oral form. Your veterinarian sets how often it is repeated.
Cats
Which vaccines does a cat need?
Rabies and FVRCP, the feline combination that covers rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia.
How often is rabies given?
California law requires it for cats and dogs, and the vaccine is repeated every three years in healthy adults. Your veterinarian sets the schedule.
Timing and records
How long must vaccines last?
They must be current through the end of the stay. A vaccine that expires mid-stay is a problem, so check the dates.
How do I send records?
Upload them to your online account, email them, or bring a copy to the first check-in. Send updated records after boosters.
How early should I vaccinate?
Allow time for the canine flu booster, which comes 3 to 4 weeks after the first dose. Pets must be 16 weeks old before the first day.
Kennel cough
Does the Bordetella vaccine prevent every cough?
No vaccine covers every respiratory illness, because several viruses and bacteria can cause kennel cough. Vaccinating still helps, which is why Bordetella and canine influenza are asked.
Where can I read more?
See the kennel cough and canine influenza pages for plain-English detail.
What if a record is missing or about to expire?
Send the new record before the stay. A record that expires partway through the stay must be updated, so ask your veterinarian for a current copy.
Can I board a pet that is 14 weeks old?
Pets must be 16 weeks old before the first day of the stay and have received the vaccinations recommended for their age.
