Please ask about small pet boarding

A rabbit is easy to love and particular to leave. This page covers what the kennel needs from you and what the veterinary references say rabbits need most: lots of hay, steady temperatures and a calm routine.

Booking a rabbit stay

Rabbits are on the list of small pets the kennel accepts, along with gerbils, hamsters, rats, guinea pigs and birds. Call 707-678-6600 or send a request through your online account, and the kennel confirms every reservation. The boarding agreement is completed once, even with an online account.

Rates for small pets are quoted on request, so please ask when you call. Check-out is by 11:30 AM, and drop-off and pick-up run 7:30 to 11:30 AM and 2:00 to 5:00 PM.

What to bring

  • Your rabbit's own cage or carrier setup, since the kennel may ask you to provide it
  • Enough of the usual hay for the whole stay plus extra
  • The usual pellets in their original bag, with the amount per day written down
  • The leafy greens your rabbit already eats, with a note of which ones
  • Any medication with written instructions; medications are given at no extra charge

What the House Rabbit Society says about diet

The House Rabbit Society recommends that hay make up about 85 percent of an adult rabbit's diet, with unlimited fresh grass hay offered daily. It suggests a small amount of high-fiber, timothy-based pellets, and fresh vegetables, introduced one new green at a time.

That is a good reason to pack the exact hay and pellets your rabbit eats at home. A sudden change in food is the last thing a traveling rabbit needs, and staff can work from written feeding instructions.

Temperature matters to rabbits

The Merck Veterinary Manual says rabbits are sensitive to heat and poor ventilation, that long exposure above 80 degrees F can make them sick, and that they do poorly below 50 degrees F. Dixon summers run hot, so rabbits are happier in a stay that keeps them out of direct sun and heat. Ask the front desk where small pets are kept and how the room is cooled when you book. The Dixon heat and cold by month page shows how hot the valley gets.

Before you drive out

  1. Call to ask about dates and rates.
  2. Write out feeding amounts, medication and anything your rabbit dislikes.
  3. Pack the cage, hay, pellets, greens and a favorite hide.
  4. Complete the boarding agreement at the first drop-off if you have not already.

Wonderful staff and my dogs enjoyed their stay. We even boarded our guinea pigs for a week.
