Puppy boarding

A puppy's first trips away from home shape how it feels about boarding later. Timing the vaccines and visiting the kennel first make that first stay smoother.

The age and vaccine rule

The kennel requires dogs and cats to be 16 weeks old before the first day of the stay. Puppies also need the recommended vaccinations for their age, with proof on file: rabies, distemper/parvo, Bordetella and canine influenza. The flu vaccine is accepted for boarding after the first dose, and the booster follows three to four weeks later.

California law says a dog 3 months or older must be vaccinated against rabies, so most puppies reach that milestone before the 16-week mark. Ask your veterinarian for a schedule. Details: puppy vaccine schedule and how old does a puppy have to be to board.

Choosing a size

Puppies grow fast. A small-breed puppy is comfortable in an Economy run ($52 a night), and a pup who will be a large adult may be happier in Business Class ($59) or First Class ($72) for the extra room. Compare the three on the kennel sizes page.

A gentle first visit

1. Tour the kennel between 9 and 11 AM or 2 and 4 PM, no appointment needed.
2. Start with a short hourly day care visit at $7 an hour.
3. Book a weekend stay once your puppy has had a good day.
4. Send one familiar toy, but not the favorite.

What to expect

Puppies get walks, the run's doggie door to choose inside or out, a Kuranda bed and blankets. Food is included, or bring your puppy's own at no charge. Pack feeding amounts in cups, and tell staff about any recent change in food or health.
