AKC calls the Pekingese a compact toy companion of regal bearing, with a rolling gait, loyal and full of subtle charms. A short nose and a thick coat make heat the main item to plan for.
Low and compact
A Peke is only 6 to 9 inches tall, with a long body and short legs. Economy gives about 16 square feet inside plus 48 outside, which is more floor than this dog will use. Two from one home share for $52 plus $44.
Double coat, one cell
The coat is long and double, with a thick mane. It sits in the Extra Long or Double Coated column, $35 at 15 pounds or less. AKC puts shedding at 3 of 5, heavier than you might expect from a toy dog. Please ask to confirm.
Flat face, warm weather
Brachycephalic dogs overheat quickly, and a heavy coat adds to it. Vacaville records about 100 days a year at 90 degrees or more (NOAA). The air-conditioned inside half of the run is a Peke's midday spot; see our flat-faced dog page for what staff watch for.
Slow walks
Energy is 3 of 5. A Peke prefers a stroll to a sprint, and the walks included in the stay suit that. The grass field is for a sniff and a roll.
Dignity and handling
Pekes are sensitive and can be stubborn with strangers, so tell us your dog's likes and dislikes on the form. Leave your dog in the car at check-in; staff carry belongings and walk your dog in.
Settling in and pick-up
Hours are every day, 7:30 to 11:30 AM and 2:00 to 5:00 PM, with check-out by 11:30 AM. An afternoon pick-up costs half of the nightly fee. Because a Peke handles heat poorly, plan summer arrivals in the morning and leave your dog in the car with the air on until staff come out. On hot pavement staff may scoop up a small dog and hurry across.
Cost and records
Four nights in Economy is 4 x $52 on the 2026 rates, and 14 nights or more is $47. Rabies, distemper/parvo, Bordetella and canine influenza records must be good through the last day. Request a stay or call 707-678-6600.
