The AKC calls the Chin a bright and amusing lapdog that is fastidious, graceful and generally quiet. A stay for one is mostly about warmth, a soft place to settle and a coat that stays tidy.
Economy is already roomy for a Chin
The AKC standard gives an ideal height of 8 to 11 inches, and its weight chart lists 7 to 11 pounds. Economy offers about 16 square feet inside plus 48 outside, far more floor than a dog this size needs. Two Chins from one home can share the run: $52 for the first and $44 for the second on the 2026 rates, which often settles a dog who is unsure about a new place.
A silky single coat
The standard describes an abundant, straight, single coat, silky with a resilient texture, that tends to stand out from the body. It forms a mane or ruff on the neck, shoulders and chest, a plumed tail and heavy pants on the rump. Because it is a single coat with feathering, a few days of dirt and dew can leave it dull. On the bath chart effective January 1, 2024, a dog of 15 pounds or less is $30 in the Medium column and $35 in the Extra Long column. Tell us which one fits your dog's coat length, and please ask to confirm today's price.
Quiet company, reserved with new things
The AKC standard calls the breed sensitive and intelligent, affectionate with people it knows and reserved with strangers or in new situations. Expect a Chin to watch the first hour before it relaxes. One familiar blanket helps, and so does telling the staff what your dog likes to do at home. Walks are included, and the large fenced play areas give a small dog room to trot without hurry.
Warm afternoons and the short muzzle
The standard describes a large broad head with a short broad muzzle. That is a reason to plan the midday for comfort. The NOAA Vacaville station (1991-2020 normals) records about 100 days a year at 90 degrees or more, so on those days the air-conditioned inside half of the run is the better place for a Chin. Each dog chooses inside or out through the doggie door. Winter mornings are the other side: the runs are heated, and a Kuranda bed lifts a small dog off the floor. More about short-faced dogs is on the flat-faced dogs page.
Booking a short or long stay
A weekend of 3 nights in Economy is 3 x $52 on the 2026 rates. At 14 nights or more the rate is $47 a night, and active military pay that same reduced rate. Check-out is by 11:30 AM, and an afternoon pick-up is half of the nightly fee. Pets must be at least 16 weeks old, with rabies, distemper/parvo, Bordetella and canine influenza records good through the last day.
