AKC describes a plucky, happy, affectionate, no-frills working terrier with a wiry coat that is an easy keeper. Few breeds ask less of a kennel.
Right at the line
Males run 13 to 15.5 pounds and females 11.5 to 14, so a big male can sit just over 15 pounds and land in the 16 to 25 row. That moves the Short cell from $25 to $35. If you know your dog's weight, tell us and we will quote the right row.
Easy wiry coat
Shedding is 2 of 5 and coat care is 2 of 5 on the AKC pages. The harsh coat sheds mud and dries quickly after the outdoor half of the run. A bath on the last day is optional.
Energy and digging
Energy is 3 of 5. Borders are agile and curious and will dig and sniff the outdoor run. Walks are included, and the grass field and fenced play areas let them burn off the rest.
Weather
The short double coat copes with winter and handles summer better than most terriers, but Vacaville logs about 100 days a year at 90 degrees or more (NOAA). Inside runs are air-conditioned in summer and heated in winter.
Cost
A week in Economy is 7 x $52 on the 2026 rates; 14 nights or more is $47 a night. Two Borders from one home are $52 plus $44.
What to bring
Really nothing but your dog. One toy is welcome, but not the favorite. Remove any prong or choke collar before check-in. If you use a slow-feeder bowl, bring it. The house menu includes grain-free kibble and wet food, farm-fresh eggs, hot dogs and treats, all at no charge. If your Border eats a measured amount, send the food in its original bag with cups written down. Medications are given at no extra charge.
Records and booking
Rabies, distemper/parvo, Bordetella and canine influenza records must be good through the last day. Request a stay or call 707-678-6600; the kennel confirms every reservation.
