The AKC calls the breed curious, lively and intense but mischievous, a plucky little black dog. That curiosity is the thing to plan for during a stay.
Compact enough for Economy
The standard suggests 11 to 13 inches for males and 10 to 12 for females, square in profile and thickset. The AKC weight chart lists 10 to 16 pounds. One Schipperke uses a small part of Economy, about 16 square feet inside and 48 outside. A second Schipperke from the same home is $44.
A coat with several lengths
The standard describes a coat that grows in distinct lengths in a pattern: short on the face, ears and front of the forelegs, medium on the body, and longer in the ruff, cape, jabot and culottes. The outer coat must be black, and the undercoat may be lighter. That ruff is thick, so use the Extra Long or Double Coated column of the bath chart effective January 1, 2024: $35 at 15 pounds or less and $45 at 16 to 25 pounds. Please ask to confirm.
Watchdog energy
The standard says the Schipperke is interested in everything around him and a faithful little watchdog, reserved with strangers. At a kennel that means a dog who barks at the neighbors and the gate. Walks are included and the large fenced play areas burn off the lively streak. Let the staff know what sets your dog off.
Black coat, hot summer
A black coat absorbs sun. The NOAA Vacaville station (1991-2020 normals) records about 100 days a year at 90 degrees or more. The air-conditioned inside half is the afternoon spot, and the outside run is for mornings and evenings. The doggie door lets your Schipperke choose.
Cost snapshot
Three nights in Economy is 3 x $52 = $156 on the 2026 rates. A 14 night stay at the long-stay rate is 14 x $47 = $658. House food is free, or bring your own in cups.
