The Toy Fox Terrier has a satin coat. The Wire is a different dog: a working terrier with a coat like coconut matting, in the AKC's words, and a standard that wants it on the tiptoe of expectation.
Twice the dog of a Toy Fox Terrier
The standard says a full-sized dog should not exceed 15.5 inches at the withers and should scale about 18 pounds, with a bitch a couple of pounds lighter. The Toy Fox Terrier is a fraction of that. Economy has about 16 square feet inside plus 48 outside, and it is the right size for one Wire. Two from the same home share at $52 and $44.
Wiry broken coat with an undercoat
The AKC describes dense, wiry hair that twists and breaks, growing so closely that the skin cannot be seen when parted, with a softer undercoat beneath. The coat holds dirt and burrs. On the bath chart effective January 1, 2024, the 16 to 25 pound row shows $40 in the Medium column; a dog of 15 pounds or less is $30. Please ask to confirm.
Alert and quick
The standard wants a terrier alert, quick of movement and keen of expression. That translates to a dog who notices every squirrel and bird on the property. Walks are included, and the fenced play areas let a Wire run the fence line. Keep a snug collar on at drop-off and tell staff if your dog bolts.
A dense coat in a hot valley
The NOAA Vacaville station (1991-2020 normals) records about 100 days a year at 90 degrees or more. The wiry coat sheds dirt but holds heat, so the air-conditioned inside half is where a Wire should spend the afternoon. Your dog picks through the doggie door.
What to expect on the bill
A week in Economy is 7 x $52 = $364 on the 2026 rates, or 14 nights at $47 a night from the long-stay rate. Medications are free. Bring your own food in the original bag if your dog is on a special diet.
