The English Cocker is the taller, heavier, longer-legged spaniel, not the American Cocker. AKC calls the breed merry, upbeat in the field and mellow at home, with a silky coat and a bird dog build.
Taller and heavier than the American Cocker
Males stand 16 to 17 inches and females 15 to 16, which is about an inch and a half taller than the American Cocker and several pounds heavier. That extra frame still sits comfortably in Economy, about 16 square feet inside plus 48 outside with a Kuranda bed. Two English Cockers from one home share for $52 plus $44. If yours is a stocky 34 pounder who likes to stretch out, Business Class at $59 is the roomier choice.
Coat and bath cell
AKC lists the coat as double, medium to long, with feathering on the ears, chest, belly and legs. At 26 to 50 pounds the 2024 chart reads $45 for a Medium coat and $55 for Extra Long or Double Coated; a dog kept in a short sporting clip is nearer the Medium cell. Please ask to confirm the cell when you book.
Ears, feathers and a long stay
Long ears drag through water and gravy, and burrs and mud collect in the leg feathering after play. On a stay of a week or more, a bath on the last day sends your dog home clean. AKC puts shedding at 3 of 5.
Energy: field dog, house dog
AKC places energy at 3 of 5, moderate. These spaniels were bred to work a field and love a ball, so the fenced play areas and the grass field suit them, and walks are included. They settle calmly in the run afterward.
Heat and the feathered coat
Vacaville, about 8 miles away, records around 100 days a year at 90 degrees or more (NOAA, 1991-2020 normals). A heavy feathered coat holds that heat, so the air-conditioned inside half of the run matters. Your dog picks inside or out through the doggie door.
Booking
Rabies, distemper/parvo, Bordetella and canine influenza records must be good through the last day. Request a stay through Book / My Account or call 707-678-6600; the kennel confirms every reservation. Our American Cocker page covers the smaller cousin.
