A Westie is a working earthdog in a plush-toy coat. At a kennel that means a small dog with a big interest in everything that moves.
Small dog, Economy run
The AKC puts a Westie at 10 to 11 inches and 15 to 20 pounds. Economy is the match: 4x4 ft, $52 a night for one dog, or $44 for a second small dog from your home sharing. The run has an inside half and an outside half, which suits a terrier who likes to patrol.
Coat and baths
The AKC describes an all-white double coat that is hard to the touch, not soft and fluffy, and lists seasonal shedding. White shows a day outdoors, so a bath before pick-up is worth asking about. At 15 pounds or less the double coated column of the 2024 bath chart is $35; at 16 to 25 pounds it is $45. Please ask to confirm.
Alert, active and independent
The AKC says Westies were bred to hunt rats and other underground rodents and that they will chase after anything that moves. It also calls them alert, active, plucky and self-reliant. Tell the front desk if your Westie is a digger or a fence-watcher. The large fenced play areas and the daily walks give that terrier energy a place to go.
Heat, cold and the run
A 15 to 20 pound dog heats up and cools off fast. The indoor side of the run is air-conditioned in summer, and your Westie decides when to use it. On a hot day the shaded outside side is fine for short stretches too.
Terrier habits worth mentioning
A Westie that digs, barks at the fence line or shadows the staff is a normal Westie, and the front desk would rather hear about it than guess. Put the details on the boarding agreement, which is signed once even if you have an online account. The booking is a request, and the kennel confirms every reservation.
