The Chessie is the retriever with a mind of its own. The AKC says it is more emotionally complex than the usual gundog.
Business Class for a waterproof retriever
At 55 to 80 pounds, a Chessie sits right where a Labrador does. Business Class, 5x6 ft at $59 a night, fits one. Two from the same home may share a First Class run at $72 and $61.
Coat and baths
The AKC says the distinctive trait is a wavy coat that is oily to the touch, and lists regular shedding. The oil is what repels water. On the bath chart effective January 1, 2024, the medium column is $50 at 51 to 75 pounds and $55 at 76 to 100. Please ask to confirm which column fits.
Tireless, protective and independent
The AKC says Chessies take to training but can tenaciously pursue their own path, and that they are protective of their people and polite but not overtly friendly to strangers. At drop-off, a calm hand-off in the parking lot helps. The retriever's stamina means walks and the grass field are the highlights.
Heat, cold and the run
A dense oily coat on a 70 pound dog warms up fast. Air-conditioned inside space matters on summer days that run above 90 degrees about 100 days a year near Dixon.
A watchful retriever at check-in
Because the AKC says Chessies are protective of their people, a calm drop-off is best. Staff walk your dog in from the car. Bring the vaccine records in advance through the online account, which also holds your booking request.
Rates for one or two
A Chessie in Business Class is $59 a night on the 2026 rates, or $53 at 14 or more nights. Two Chessies from one home in First Class are $72 and $61. Bring your own food in its original bag if you prefer, with the amount in cups; the house food is free. Medications are given at no extra charge.
