The AKC calls the Walker a smart, brave and sensible hunter nicknamed The People's Choice, and warns that the name misleads: Walkers are runners that cover a lot of ground in a hurry. A kennel stay for a hound like that is mostly about motion and company.
Size and kennel
The AKC lists males at 22 to 27 inches and females at 20 to 25 inches, at 50 to 70 pounds. A lean 50 pound dog could use Economy at $52, but Walkers are rangy, with long legs, and most do better in Business Class at $59, 5x6 feet inside plus about 60 outside. Two hounds from one home share Business Class for $59 plus $50.
Short coat, simple bath
The Walker coat is short and smooth. On the bath chart effective January 1, 2024, a short coat is $40 at 26 to 50 pounds and $45 at 51 to 75. Please ask to confirm the price. There is little to tangle, though hounds pick up burrs on their long ears and may need a wipe after the grass field.
A runner with a voice
Coonhounds work by trailing and treeing game, and many are loud. Some will bay at passing staff or other dogs. Each dog has its own run, and the indoor space helps muffle noise, but we want to know if your hound is a talker. Walks are included, and the fenced play areas and grass field give a runner room to move. A hound will follow its nose, which is why walks are on leash.
Heat and ears
nearby Vacaville, the closest weather station, averages about 100 days a year at 90 degrees or higher. A short coat is easier to carry in heat than a thick one, but a hard-running hound still overheats, so afternoons indoors in the air-conditioned run are wise. Kuranda beds in the run keep a lean dog off the floor on cool nights.
What to sort out before drop-off
Hounds are often outdoor dogs, so check that the vaccine records are current through the last day of the stay and that your dog arrives free of fleas and ticks. Bring the food in its original bag with the amount in cups, or use the house food at no charge, and remove any metal pinch (prong) collar before check-in.
