The AKC standard calls the Tibetan Spaniel gay and assertive, highly intelligent and aloof with strangers. The silky double coat and a small, proud body make for a stay that is mostly about routine and warmth.
A small dog, a small footprint
The standard gives a height of about 10 inches, with a body slightly longer than tall, and 9 to 15 pounds as ideal. Economy is about 16 square feet inside plus 48 outside and is plenty. A second Tibetan Spaniel from the same home is $44.
A silky double coat with a shawl
The standard describes a double coat, silky in texture, smooth on the face and front of the legs, moderate length on the body and lying rather flat, with feathering on the ears, backs of the forelegs and toes, a full tail, and a mane or shawl on the neck that is more pronounced in dogs than bitches. On the bath chart effective January 1, 2024, that fits the Double Coated column: $35 at 15 pounds or less. Please ask to confirm. A quick brush before drop-off keeps the feathering free of knots.
Aloof, bright, particular
Tibetan Spaniels are watchers. The standard says aloof with strangers, and a dog like that does best when the first minutes are quiet. Leave your dog in the car at check-in and staff will walk him in. Bring one familiar blanket and a toy that is not the favorite. Walks are included and the large fenced areas let a small dog trot at his own pace.
Heat and cold
The NOAA Vacaville station (1991-2020 normals) records about 100 days a year at 90 degrees or more. A small dog with a double coat prefers the air-conditioned inside half of the run during the afternoon, with the doggie door open for his choice. In winter the runs are heated and a Kuranda bed lifts a small dog off the floor.
Costs and records
Four nights in Economy is 4 x $52 = $208 on the 2026 rates. At 14 nights or more the rate is $47. Rabies, distemper/parvo, Bordetella and canine influenza must be good through the last day, and pets must be 16 weeks or older before the first day.
