The Chihuahua is a tiny breed, but a mix can be much bigger. A Chi-Terrier might weigh 8 pounds and a Chi-Lab cross 30, so we plan from the scale, not the label.
Small, smaller and not so small
The American Kennel Club lists the Chihuahua at 5 to 8 inches and not over 6 pounds. A Chihuahua mixed with a Dachshund, Terrier, Pug or Poodle can run from 5 to 25 pounds. All of those fit comfortably in an Economy run, about 16 square feet inside and 48 outside. A whole litter of Chihuahuas can use a First Class kennel, 6x8 feet inside. Sharing is easy for a bonded pair.
Bath chart cells for a tiny dog
The chart effective January 1, 2024 starts at 15 pounds or less: $20 extra short, $25 short, $30 medium and $35 for long or double coats. Between 16 and 25 pounds it is $30, $35, $40 and $45. A smooth-coated Chi mix is the cheapest column and a long-haired one the most. Tell us which, and please ask to confirm the current price.
Staying warm, staying calm
Small dogs lose heat faster than large ones. Our runs are heated in winter, each has a Kuranda bed and a blanket, and a dog can burrow in the blanket indoors or go out through the doggie door. Chi types can be vocal and nervous at a new place. One toy from home and a calm hand-off at check-in help. Staff carry the bags while you keep your dog in the car until it is time to walk in.
Eating and medicine
Tiny dogs can be particular eaters. You can bring your own food in the original bag with the amount in cups, or use the house food at no charge. Medications are given at no extra charge, which matters for small dogs on heart or dental prescriptions.
Getting a Chihuahua Mix ready to board
Upload the vaccine records ahead of time and keep your dog in the car until staff are ready to walk it in. Small paws and hot pavement do not mix, so staff may scoop the dog up and hurry.
