The American Kennel Club calls the Pointer the ultimate expression of canine power and grace, and says the high-energy breed is an excellent runner's companion. That energy is the main thing to plan for at a kennel.
Size and the right kennel
The AKC lists male Pointers at 25 to 28 inches and 55 to 75 pounds, and females at 23 to 26 inches and 45 to 65 pounds. A lean female near 45 pounds could use Economy ($52 a night), but most Pointers want the 5x6 foot interior of Business Class at $59, with about 60 square feet outside. Two Pointers from one home do well in First Class: $72 for the first and $61 for the second.
A short coat and one column on the chart
The Pointer coat is short, dense and smooth, close to what the bath chart calls short. On the chart effective January 1, 2024, a short coat is $40 at 26 to 50 pounds, $45 at 51 to 75 and $50 at 76 to 100 pounds. There is not much to shed or tangle, so a bath is a choice after a muddy day rather than a need. Please ask to confirm today's price.
Built to run
Pointers were bred to cover ground in front of a hunter and then hold a point. A day of sitting is a big change for a dog like that. Walks come with every stay, and the large fenced play areas and grass field give a Pointer a place to stretch its legs. Tell us if your dog is typically calm indoors or hard to settle, and bring one toy that is not the favorite.
Thin coat, hot afternoons
A short coat gives little insulation in winter and no shade in summer. The runs are heated in winter and air-conditioned in summer, and each has a Kuranda bed and blanket, so a lean dog can curl up warm. nearby Vacaville, the closest weather station, averages about 100 days a year at 90 degrees or more, and the afternoon is a good time to be indoors.
What to sort out before drop-off
Upload the vaccine records, check that they stay current through the last day of the stay, and arrive free of fleas and ticks. Remove any metal pinch (prong) collar. Staff carry the bags while your Pointer waits in the car.
