Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend boarding

MLK weekend is a quiet one on the holiday calendar. The kennel is not on its closed list, the deposit window from New Year's has passed, and the usual pick-up windows apply.

What is different from a normal weekend

Very little. Drop-off and pick-up run 7:30 to 11:30 AM and 2:00 to 5:00 PM on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Of the holidays on the hours page, the kennel closes all day only for New Year's Day, Easter, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, so Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a regular day.

The deposit question

The 2026 rate sheet applies the 50 percent holiday deposit to stays beginning within seven days of a major holiday. In the research behind this site, the major holidays are the seven closure days, and the one nearest MLK Day is New Year's Day. Its window for stays beginning runs December 25, 2026 through January 8, 2027. A drop-off on Friday, January 15 is a week past that, so the sheet does not call for a deposit. Please call 707-678-6600 to confirm for your dates, because the sheet never lists the major holidays by name.

Check your own dates with the holiday deposit checker.

A three-night example

Drop off one dog on Friday, January 15, 2027, and pick up Monday, January 18 by 11:30 AM. That is three nights. In Business Class on the 2026 rates, 3 x $59 = $177. In First Class it is 3 x $72 = $216. A cat in the cattery for the same three nights is 3 x $35 = $105. Picking up Monday afternoon instead adds half a night.

Who books this weekend

UC Davis observes the day as a campus holiday, so Davis faculty, staff and students get a long weekend and often a short trip. The kennel is about 21 minutes from Davis. Families with kids out of school may also be heading to the mountains; Dixon sits on the I-80 route, and the Lake Tahoe trips page covers that drive.

January weather

NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Vacaville, about 8 miles from the kennel, show January highs near 57.6 degrees and lows near 39.6, with about 5.55 inches of rain on average and rain on about 12 days. Lows reach freezing on about 5 days. Every run has an indoor room that is heated in winter, so a dog can come in from a wet yard whenever it likes. Pack nothing special; blankets and a Kuranda raised bed are in each run.

Before the weekend

1. Send your booking request through the Book / My Account link.
2. Upload vaccine records that stay current through your pick-up day.
3. Sign the boarding agreement once if you have not.
4. Wait for the kennel to confirm the reservation.
