Many dogs are called pit bulls, from registered purebreds to shelter mixes. This page uses the UKC standard for the American Pit Bull Terrier as a guide to size and coat, and the same kennel rules apply to every dog: all breeds are welcome, neutered or intact.
Size and the right kennel
The UKC standard describes a medium-sized, solidly built, short-coated dog with smooth, well-defined muscle, and says overall balance matters more than the exact weight. Its desirable weights are 35 to 60 pounds for a mature male in good condition and 30 to 50 for a mature female. A dog in that range fits Business Class, with about 30 square feet inside and 60 outside, at $59 a night. A smaller dog under 45 pounds can use Economy at $52.
Coat and baths
The UKC calls the coat glossy and smooth, close and moderately stiff to the touch, in any color or pattern except merle. The kennel's own bath chart uses Pitbull as an example of the extra short column. On the bath chart effective January 1, 2024, that column is $35 at 26 to 50 pounds and $40 at 51 to 75. Please ask to confirm the price for your dog.
Energy, people and fences
The UKC describes the American Pit Bull Terrier as eager to please and brimming over with enthusiasm, with a love of children, and says it does well in performance events because of its intelligence and willingness to work. It also notes that the breed is among the most capable canine climbers and that good fencing matters. The kennel's runs and large fenced play areas are built for dogs of every kind, and walks are included. Bring a collar that fits well, and remove any metal pinch (prong) collar before check-in.
Heat and cold
A short smooth coat gives little cover in either direction. The runs are heated in winter and air-conditioned in summer, with a Kuranda bed and blankets in every run. Near Dixon about 28 days a year reach 100 degrees or more, so on those days the indoor side of the run is the right place for a muscular dog. Your dog chooses inside or out through the doggie door.
Same rules for every dog
Every dog needs rabies, distemper/parvo, Bordetella and canine influenza on file, good through the last day of the stay. Pets must be 16 weeks or older before the first day and arrive flea and tick free. Booking is a request through the online account, and the kennel confirms every reservation. Two dogs from the same home can share a run, with the second dog about 15 percent off.
