Italy's truffle dog looks like a teddy bear and works like a pro. Its coat feels like human hair, and that matters.
A small athlete with a rare coat
Under 20 inches and no more than 35 pounds, a Lagotto fits Economy (4x4 ft, $52 a night). It has the stamina of a working breed, so the outside half of the run is useful.
Coat and baths
The AKC says the trademark curls feel and behave like human hair, and lists infrequent shedding. On the bath chart effective January 1, 2024, the medium column is $45 at 26 to 50 pounds. Please ask to confirm which column suits curls.
Keen nose, keen on people
The AKC calls Lagotti affectionate and keen and says they are rugged workers of true strength and endurance with an excellent nose. The AKC marks them as good with other dogs. Walks and the grass field let a nose work.
Heat, cold and the run
Curls trap heat on a hot day. The AKC lists a double coat; the air-conditioned inside run is the right place at midday.
A working nose in a kennel run
The AKC says the Lagotto roots out truffles, a dainty and pricey delicacy, with an excellent nose. The grass field and daily walks give a nose plenty to read. Say if your Lagotto is a digger on the boarding agreement.
Coat care before and after
Curls that behave like human hair do best when they are brushed through before the stay. A bath before pick-up is available for boarders; please ask. The AKC lists infrequent shedding.
Rates and sharing
Economy is $52 a night for one dog on the 2026 rates. The AKC marks Lagotti as good with other dogs, so two from one home can share Economy for $52 and $44. A 7 night stay for one dog is 7 x $52 = $364.
What a stay for a Lagotto Romagnolo costs
Every figure here is from the 2026 rates; the balance is paid at pick-up. The reduced rate starts at 14 nights; active military families pay that same reduced rate, about 10 percent off (the rate sheet does not list the two as combining; call 707-678-6600 to confirm).
