The short tail is the first thing people notice, but for a boarding stay the useful details are the heavy muscle, the two coat lengths and the easygoing temperament.
A heavy cat that likes to hunt toys
The CFA says the American Bobtail is medium to large, with bodies that feel surprisingly heavy because of muscle development, and that males usually outweigh females. It also says the breed loves hunt-style play: stalking and pouncing on toys. In the cattery each cat has an individual four-level tower, which gives a stalker something to climb and watch from. A cat tree and cat houses are also part of the cattery. One cat is $35 a night on the 2026 rates.
Two coats, light care
Both shorthair and longhair Bobtails exist. The CFA says the coat is easily maintained with weekly brushing or combing and that baths are optional. For a stay, a quick comb at home the day before drop-off is plenty. Longhaired cats that have been brushed come in tidier and are more comfortable on a fresh blanket.
Temperament in a new place
The CFA lists the breed as intelligent and independent yet affectionate, bonded closely to its family, usually quiet with soft chirps or trills when engaged. That mix suits a calm, structured routine: meals at set times, a clean box and a blanket that stays in the tower. Tell the staff how your cat usually eats and whether it likes to be handled, and bring one familiar toy.
Costs for a typical trip
A second cat from the same home sharing the condo is $30 a night, so two Bobtails for seven nights come to 7 x $35 + 7 x $30 = $455. Check-out is by 11:30 AM; an afternoon pick-up (2:00 to 5:00 PM) is half of the nightly fee.
| Stay | One cat | Math on the 2026 rates |
|---|---|---|
| 3 nights | $105 | 3 x $35 |
| 7 nights | $245 | 7 x $35 |
| 14 nights | $490 | 14 x $35 |
Medication, food and the tail
The CFA notes the tail mutation could make a cat susceptible to spine and hip problems, so mention any mobility or comfort needs when you book. Medications are given at no extra charge. House food is pate plus chicken-and-rice kibble at no charge, and your own food is welcome in its original bag with amounts written in cups.
