# How long can cats be left alone?

A healthy adult cat can usually manage one night alone with fresh water, food and a clean litter box, but anything longer needs a daily check by a person. Kittens, senior cats and cats on medication need more frequent care.

Cats are independent, but they are not self-sufficient. Water bowls spill, feeders jam and litter boxes fill up, and a cat cannot fix any of that on its own.

## The honest answer by situation

These ranges are rules of thumb, not guarantees. Ask your vet about any cat with a health condition.

| Situation | Reasonable plan |
| --- | --- |
| Healthy adult, one night | Water, food and a clean box are usually enough |
| Healthy adult, two to three days | A daily visit from a sitter or a boarding stay |
| Kitten | Frequent care; do not leave alone for long stretches |
| Senior cat or cat on medication | Daily care, with medication given on schedule |
| Trip of a week or more | A cattery stay or a sitter who visits daily |

## What goes wrong when a cat is left too long

The AAFP and International Society of Feline Medicine environmental guidelines say a cat needs food, water and litter boxes in separate quiet spots, with a litter box available per cat plus one. A box that fills up gets avoided. A bowl that tips over leaves a cat without water. An automatic feeder can jam, and a fountain can stop. Stress also shows up as hiding, skipped meals and litter problems, which are easier to catch when someone is there.

## If you are away for a weekend

A single overnight with plenty of water in more than one spot, extra litter boxes and a measured meal is manageable for most healthy adults. For two nights or more, plan a person to check in. Boarding gives you daily care in a place designed for cats. At Happy Paws each cat has an individual four-level condo with its own litter box and blanket, and the 2026 rate is $35 a night.

## What not to rely on

Do not count on a feeder alone, and do not leave a cat with a large pile of dry food and call it a plan. Cats on a diet, cats with kidney problems and cats that gulp food need measured care. Cats on medication need the dose on time, which is why [boarding a cat on medication](https://happypawskennels.com/guides/cats/cats-on-medication/) is covered on its own page.

### Can a cat stay alone for a weekend?

Many healthy adult cats can, with a check-in visit. A boarding stay is an easier way to make sure food, water, litter and company are covered.

### Can kittens be left alone?

Kittens need frequent care and should not be left for long stretches. Ask your vet about your kitten's age.

### Does Happy Paws take cats for just one night?

Yes, the cattery charges by the night. Call 707-678-6600 to ask about dates.
