Drive time is free-flow and runs slow on Midway Road; allow extra time. Sacramento has about 200,321 households, by far the most of any town we serve. Most of them are a longer drive away, which suits trips of several nights rather than a day. ## Quick facts - About 35 minutes, 27 miles from central Sacramento - Estimated 64,300 Sacramento homes with a cat - $35 a night, $30 for an additional cat sharing a tower - Payment at pick-up by cash, check, debit or card ## The biggest cat population we serve If the national cat ownership share held, about 64,300 of Sacramento's 200,321 households would have a cat. That is an estimate from Census and AVMA data, not a count of cats. About 48 percent of Sacramento households rent, and about 30 percent have children, so a lot of people travel without family nearby to look in on a cat. ## Driving out from Sacramento The route from the city center uses Interstate 80 for about 15.7 miles, US 50 for 5.3, Highway 113 for 4.1 and a short piece of Business 80, then Midway Road. The free-flow estimate is about 35 minutes. Commute hours can add to that, so choose the window that fits your day. ## Pairing a stay with a flight The kennel is on the west side of the valley, so leaving from Sacramento International (SMF) after a drop-off is realistic; the [SMF page](https://happypawskennels.com/occasions/sacramento-airport-smf/) lays out the trip between the kennel and the airport. ## Longer stays and paying The balance is due at pick-up, and the kennel takes cash, checks, debit and Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover. For a stay longer than four weeks, a card stays on file and is charged every two weeks in advance. Ten nights for one cat is 10 x $35 = $350. Afternoon pick-up on the last day is charged half of the nightly fee, which helps when you land in the afternoon. ## Sacramento's local rules Sacramento County's Bradshaw Animal Shelter is at 3839 Bradshaw Road. For a stay at the kennel, you send the rabies and FVRCP record, current through the last day, and sign a one-time boarding agreement. ### Sources (checked October 19, 2026) - [U.S. Census Bureau ACS 2020-2024 5-year estimates](https://api.census.gov/data/2024/acs/acs5) - [AVMA 2024 pet ownership shares](https://www.avma.org/news/pet-population-continues-increase-while-pet-spending-declines) - [Happy Paws Kennels 2026 rate sheet (PDF)](https://happypawskennels.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/2026-Rates-EFFECTIVE-1-1-26.pdf) - [Sacramento County Animal Care](https://animalcare.saccounty.gov) ### 2026 nightly rates - First Class kennel $72 - Business Class kennel $59 - Economy Class kennel $52 - Cat condo $35 All-inclusive: food, medications and walks. 2026 rates, effective for reservations made on or after Jan 1, 2026. Well treated heat and AC all is good. They send me photos of them and they're very very friendly staff. I highly recommend HAPPY PAWS to anyone. Marc B., Google review, August 2026 I love this place and so do the dogs. They offers tours, have A/C and/or heat. They always look and smell super clean. They even filter the indoor air. They email pics of them playing. I have 2 large breeds that share a 1st class kennel. They even offer treats and baths. So nice to have a place I trust. Everyone is...
